Catfish season is almost here but the last of the big trout are still being caught at Santa Ana River Lakes.  S.A.R.L. has already started pre-stocking catfish twice a week in anticipation for the huge catfish opener May 23rd.   Art Flores of Norwalk landed a 9 pound rainbow trout using orange dough bait in Chris’ Pond.  Chuck Mallory of Lakewood caught a 5 1/2 lb. trout using white lightning also in Chris’ Pond.  Andrew & Dennis Deal of Andrew Deal Outdoors caught 3 trout totaling 5 pounds using chartreuse at the boat dock. Limits of catfish & trout being reported at Corona Lake.

Corona Lake hasn’t officially started their catfish season and already limits of catfish are being checked in at the tackle-shop. If this is a sign of things to come, you can expect a fantastic catfish opener starting May 23rd.  Night-crawlers & mackerel soaked in Eagle Claw Catfish Gravy seem to be the hot ticket at Corona Lake.  Eric, Johnny, Barbara Fennell of L.A. finished with 9 catfish totaling 25 pounds.  The team’s largest cat weighed in at 4 pounds and they were using mackerel on the East side of the lake. Thomas Majestic & Blanco Zachery caught 6 catfish totaling 17 pounds. Their biggest cat weighed in at 5 lbs. 5 oz. fishing near the boat dock using chicken livers.  James Holliman of Yucaipa caught a mixture of trout & catfish totaling 12 lbs. 8 oz. using mackerel at the South end.  The Catfish Grand Opening is scheduled for the big Memorial Day Weekend on May 23-24-25-26, and there will be 24-Hour Fishing all four days!! Anglers have been getting a mixture of big trout, big catfish and even big sturgeon the past week at Santa Ana River Lakes.  Fishing with a night-crawler will give you the advantage of catching any one of these species.  Heaviest fish of the week was landed by Patrick Meurs of Yorba Linda.  Patrick caught a 14 1/2 lb. sturgeon using a night-crawler by the pump house.  Biggest trout was taken by Mark Gomez of Santa Ana.  He took home 12 pound rainbow fishing with garlic green dough bait at the Bubble Hole.  Chau Vo of Anaheim caught a 9 1/2 pound catfish using fresh shrimp at “The Road”. Santiago Palacios of West Covina did a overnight fishing session and ended up with 8 catfish totaling 24 pounds.  Santiago’s largest catfish weighed in at 8 1/2 pounds using mackerel & shrimp.  Chuck & Chris Mallory caught 8 trout and 1 catfish for a total of 12 lb. 8 oz. using a combination of rooster tails & white dough bait. Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven-days-a-week for both day & night fishing. Lots of trout & catfish being caught at Corona Lake

Anglers continue to pull out limits of rainbows and even big Lightning Trout this past week at Corona Lake.  The bite has been good all around lake from shore, boat and float tube.  Adrian Contrerars & Justin Beitler of Riverside caught a mixture of 10 lightning and rainbow trout totaling 21 lbs. 10 oz. using Bline jigs.  Their largest trout weighed in at 8 lbs. 3 oz fishing from shore at the dam.  Dave Halfacre of West Covina landed a huge 6 pound 8 ounce Lightning Trout also fishing from the shore at dam with dough bait.  Vicky & Diana Sanchez or also known as the “Corona Gurlz”  ended up with 10 catfish totaling 28 lbs. 8 oz. with the biggest cat weighing in at 5 pounds.  The “Corona Gurlz” were both using night-crawlers from their float tubes.  Corona Lake is open seven-days-a-week for both day & night fishing. Despite the warmer weather the past few days huge trout and lots of nice limits are still being pulled out of S.A.R.L.  Anglers in boats and float tubes have the advantage with the deeper water.  It’s recommended that trout shore fisherman put on extra weight to cast out to the deeper waters. Heaviest fish of the week was landed by Santiago Palacios of West Covina landing a 14 1/2 lb. catfish using mackerel at “The Road” in the Big Lake.  Steve Zookzwad of Baldwin Park brought up a huge 13 lb. rainbow trout using a Trout King jig from his float tube near the Pump House.  Nshan Masihi of Glendale caught a 11 lb. 12 oz. trout using 2lb test line with Captain America dough bait at the Pump House.  Jay Lamori of West Covina managed to hook and land a 11 lb. 9 oz. trout using orange-green power mouse fishing from shore at the Big Pipe. Art & Shiela Harvey of Orange did two back to back 24 hour fishing/camping sessions and ended up with 17 fish a mixture of both trout and catfish.  The total weight of the stringer was 33 lbs. 8 oz. using white mice tails at Chris’ Pond.  Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven-days-a-week. Super Trout, Lightning Trout, Sierra Bows & Catfish all being caught at Corona Lake

Seems like everything was hungry last week at Corona Lake.  The most productive fishing has been by the dam in a boat or from shore. Forest Zinkl of Fallbrook landed a 14 lb. 8 oz. Super Trout fishing by the Boat Dock using Power Bait.  Adrian Pintor of North Hollywood got both a huge rainbow and a big Lightning Trout.  Adrian’s rainbow weighed in at 12 lbs. 10 and his lightning trout weighed in at 5 lbs. 7 oz.  Adrian was fishing with jigs off the shore at the dam. Alyanna Landeros of Mira Loma caught a 5 pound Lightning Trout using G Bait from shore.  Ismael Landeros of Mira Loma caught himself a 5 lb. 12 oz. catfish using fresh shrimp off the shore.  Baltasar Lopez of Sun City caught 4 catfish totaling 9 1/2 lbs. with his largest cat weighing in at 3 pounds.  Baltasar was using trout guts from the shore at the dam.  Corona Lake is open on a seven-days-a-week schedule. Fishing is allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $25. Seniors pay only $23, with a $20 special on Wednesdays. A 17-7 rainbow in tournament was the best
fish of the week at Santa Ana River Lakes
Massive stocks of Lightning Trout and trophy rainbows led to excellent, limit-style fishing this past weekend at Santa Ana River Lakes and the trout are being caught all around the big lake and in Chris’ Pond.
The big fish portion of the weekend tournament was won by Daniel Gutierrez, Carson, with a 17-pound, seven-ounce rainbow landed on a Lip RipperZ jig while fishing at the bubble hole.
Other quality fish reported included a 12 1/2-pounder that topped off a seven-fish, 27-pound stringer caught by Ismael Zabala and Alfonso Andrade, both Los Angeles, fishing rainbow PowerBait at the three pipes. There was an 11 1/4-pounder that was part of a 10 fish, 23 3/4-pound stringer caught by Jesse Gutierrez, Downey, and Darrell Potts, Norwalk, fish garlic-flavored chartreuse PowerBait near the pump house. Potts had the bigger fish.
Most stringers reported over the past week have had four to six-pound kicker fish, and some anglers had two or three of those bigger fish as part of their catch. Rocky Valencia, Santa Ana, had five trout totaling 17 1/4 pounds, including one fish at five-pounds, two-ounces, all on chartreuse PowerBait along the south shore and near three pipes. Craig Joachim, Anaheim, also had a 5-2 topping off his 14-pound, two-ounce five-fishing stringer, but he was fishing nightcrawlers in Chris’ Pond. Sean Hart, San Dimas, landed five trout for 13 1/2 pounds, including yet another 5-2, fishing rainbow PowerBait at the Bubble Hole. Scott Nakata, Garden Grove, fished green PowerBait to catch rainbows at 7-3 and 5-2 in Chris Pond.
The top baits have been a variety of colors of PowerBait and other dough baits, and rolling the dough in Hatchery Dust has been enhancing the action. Power Mice Tails have also been a hot bait fished normally or wacky-rigged.
The hefty weekly plants of rainbows are continuing, and there will be 24-hour fishing this coming Friday and Saturday nights (April 26 and 27) during the full moon.

Is the best trout bite of the season going on right now at Corona Lake?
There are a lot of anglers who would answer that question with an emphastic, “Yes!”
The huge plant of Lightning Trout and tons of four to 10-pound rainbows last week led to some of the best limit-style fishing of the year at this popular western Riverside County lake.
The 10-fish catch of rainbows and Lightning Trout made by Chad and son J.B. Geirlach, both Riverside, included the biggest rainbow reported this past week at 16 1/4-pounds, and one of the best Lightning Trout at 7 3/4-pounds. The 10-fish total stringer weighed 68 1/4 pounds, and the pair were fishing B-Line Jigs from a boat. While the pair’s average fish was nearly seven pounds, most stingers reported had at least one fish in that size class.
Other big fish included a 15 1/2-pound rainbow landed by Mauricio Calvario, Chino Hills, caught on a Power Mice Tail in orange and green at the dam. He also had a seven-pound rainbow on his stringer. Adrian Contreras, Riverside, had a four-fish, 25-pound stringer that included rainbows at 10, 7 1/2, and 6 3/4-pounds, all caught on white Power Worms.
Some more typical stringers included a stringer of trout that had six and seven-pound Lightning Trout landed by George Carpenter, Wildomar, fishing nightcrawlers near the boat dock. Richard Pustilnikov, Rancho Cucamonga, topped off his seven-fish, 23-pound stringer with a 7 1/2-pound Lightning Trout, while Jeff Chodkowski, Pomona, had six trout for 25 3/4-pounds, including a six-pound Lightning Trout, on Pee Wee jigs with Bite On scent. Dan Yovanovich, Newport Beach, caught four trout for a 12 1/2-pound total, including a seven-pound rainbow fishing green trout plastics at the dam. Robert Rodriguez, Whittier, landed four rainbows for 12 pounds, including a five-pound Lightning Trout, fishing nightcrawlers at the dam.
The best bite continues to be on floating dough baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust, Power Mice Tails, small trout worms, small trout jigs, or inflated nightcrawlers. All are getting a lot of fish, but the warm weather is again pushing most of the fish out of the shallows into the cooler, deeper parts of the lake (with the early morning bite an exception).
There continue to be huge plants of trout each week, and there will be 24-hour fishing this Friday and Saturday (April 26 and 27) during this month’s full moon. That 24-hour fishing also should be of real interest to catfish anglers who are starting to see some very good action on the channels and blues if they bother to target the cats. Ron and Leish Maestas, Corona, fishing nightcrawlers and trout guts to landed five catfish to three pounds and the stringer was 11 1/4 pounds.

     The fishing at Corona Lake was hightlighted by a 19-pound rainbow trout, a 25-pound sturgeon, and a 3 1/2-pound crappie this past week.

Tournament, huge stock of Lightning Trout
set for this week at Santa Ana River Lakes
     Limit-style fishing and a lot of quality rainbow trout continue to be caught at Santa Ana River Lakes, and this week the lakes’ complex will receive its largest plant of Lightning Trout – both size and number – of the season. In addition, there will be another big-fish/blind bogey tournament this coming Saturday.
     The trout action has been excellent this past week with a lot of rainbows reported. The biggest trout was a 12.1-pounder caught by Mike Gomez, Santa Ana, fishing a nightcrawler with Eagle Claw gravy off La Palma Point. Gabriel, Sofia, and Gabby Gonzalez, Rowland Heights, topped off their stringer with an 11 3/4-pounder, while Rick Flores landed a 9 1/2-pound as the best fishing on his five-fish limit fishing rainbow dough with Hatchery Dust at the road. Mike Gaughan, Orange, started his day with a 7-2 trout.
     A couple of typical limits included a five-fish catch by Craig Joaquin, Anaheim, that weighed 12 pounds and included a four-pounder, all on Mice Tails in Chris’ Pond. Tony Lopez, Los Angeles, and Terry Brown, Lake Forest, had 10 rainbows that weighed 13-4, including a 3-2, while Taylor Burak, Huntington Beach, had five trout for 10 pounds, including a stout five-pounder.
     The Lightning Trout plant this week will include huge brookstock Lightnings from six to 10 pounds along with “thousands and thousands of pounds” of one to three pounders, according to Doug Elliott, owner of the concession at Santa Ana River Lakes. “It’s our largest stocking of Lightning Trout this entire trout season.”
     In addition, this Saturday’s Big Fish-Blind Bogey Tournament is sponsored by Phil Friedman’s Outdoor’s Radio along with Lip RipperZ and Hatchery Dust. Entry fee is $20 and all entry fees will be divided equally and paid back in the big fish and blind bogey portions of the event. On the big fish side, the anglers catching the four largest fish will take home the prize money. While on the blind bogey side, 10 anglers catching trout nearest the blind bogey weights will split that pot.
     In addition, there is an added $250 pool if the big fish are caught on a Lip RipperZ lure or Hatchery Dust, and there will be a drawing for a fish trip for four to La Paz, Mexico.
     The top bait continues to be the new Hatchery Dust rolled onto the outside of just about any floating dough bait, but the Power Mice Tails have been just as popular over the past week. Small trout plastics and trout jigs are also still producing lots of fish.
     There are hefty plants of rainbows each week, and those plants always include a large component of trophy trout topping 10 pounds.

Over $9,000 raised for Healing Waters
veteran’s group during weekend trout
tournament at Santa Ana River Lakes
Over $9,000 was for Project Healing Waters during this past Saturday’s “Healing and Reeling Big Trout Tournament” at Santa Ana River Lakes.
“This special event was designed to give back and honor the gallant men and women in the nation’s armed forces who have given so much to protect our country and our freedoms,” said Craig Elliott at SARL.
Project Healing Waters is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled military service personnel through fishing, education and outings.
“The Project focuses on rehabilitation of veterans by offering them the opportunity to hang out on the water with friends, have some great fun, and some fantastic fishing,” said Elliott “And this event was lots of fun and there were lots of fish caught. The veterans and our anglers can’t wait for next year’s event.”
The winner of the big-fish event was Tobias Wildman or Carson with a 15-pound, 10-ounce rainbow he caught on a nightcrawler. Jim Anderson, La Puente, was second with a 14-pound, 15-ounce trout caught on corn dough bait, while the third place price went to Jay Lamori, West Covina, with a 13-pound, 12-ounce trout, also caught on corn-flavored dough bait.
The event has over 50 major sponsors who donated prizes to the post event raffle, including including Shimano, Western Outdoor News, Davey’s Locker, Turners, Eagle Claw, John Deere, Panther Martin and many, many more.
“The raffle took two hours to complete, there were so many prizes,” said Elliott.
The huge trout plant for the tournament also made the trout action excellent both before and after the tournament fishing day. The biggest trout of the week was a 16 1/2-pound rainbow caught by Alex Castro, East Los Angeles, on Sunday while fishing with green PowerBait at the pump house. David Rochin, Fullerton, landed a 14 3/4-pound trout on a TK Worm near the boat dock, and Mathew Estrada, Norwalk, landed a 14-pound, two-ounce rainbows on a garlic-flavored dough bait off the east shoreline of the big lake. Andy Rivera, Covina, had a 14-pound, one-ounce rainbow on chartreuse PowerBait, also near the dock, and Scott Nakata, Garden Grove, landed an 11 1/2-pound trout on a green jig off Levitz’ Corner.
The trout have been averaging from one to three pounds and many stringers have had kicker fish from four to 10 pounds or better. The trophy rainbows have been major parts of every plant put into The Lakes this season. A typical stringer of trout was a 15-fish catch reported by Mark Mitchell and Jose Tirado, both Los Angeles, that weighed in at 22-pounds, six-ounces. Their big fish was a 4 1/4-pound rainbow.
The top bait continues to be the new Hatchery Dust rolled onto the outside of just about any floating dough bait, but the Power Mice Tails, small trout plastics, and trout jigs are all producing lots of fish.

The cooler days this past week have kicked the trout action into high gear at Corona Lake for both shore and boat anglers. The warm weather had been pushing the trout out of the shallower shoreline areas into deeper water where they were less accessible to shore-bound anglers, but that changed over the past week and the limits were common for everyone. Big trout topping 10 pounds are still included in each week’s trout plant at Corona Lake, while the bulk of the fish are nice, stringer-filling one to two-pound rainbows. The best bite continues to be on floating dough baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust, with Power Mice Tails, small trout worms, small jigs, and inflated nightcrawlers all close seconds. The big fish of the week was a 14 1/2-pound rainbow landed by Terry Weelborg, Lakewood, while fishing a Mice Tail at the dam. Paul Rodriguez and Chase Shope, both Fontana, caught a total of 24 rainbows, including one at 10 1/2-pounds. Typical five-fish stringers were posted by James Eslkamp and Anthony Moronez, both Rancho Cucamonga. Their stringers weighed 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 pounds respectively and their top fish were 4 1/4 and 4 3/4 pounds. Both were fishing garlic chartreuse PowerBait at the dam. 50/50 – Big Fish, Blind Bogey Tournaments

To participate in the Tournament, the BUY IN fee is ONLY $20.00 and includes you in BOTH the BIG FISH and BLIND BOGEY Events. You can pay your BUY IN fee TWO ways. 1) Through our ON-LINE STORE, at www.fishinglakes.com/store prior to the Friday before the event by 8:00 pm, or 2) at the Tournament Registration Area BEFORE entering the Lake, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you purchase through our ON LINE STORE, make sure to print your receipt and BRING IT WITH YOU to the Tournament Registration Area. Online purchasers (with receipt in hand) can arrive at the Lake after the 8:00am CUT-OFF and still participate.  You will be given an arm band, with your name on it, to prove your entry into the Tournament at the Tournament Registration Area. This arm band is good for both the BIG FISH and the BLIND BOGEY events. This arm band must be worn at all times. If you take it off or give it to another person, you and the person you gave it to will be automatically disqualified. Your Tournament BUY IN fee does NOT include Admission to the Lakes, which is paid separately at the Entrance Booth.

PRIZE MONEY:

100% of your BUY IN fee is considered the PRIZE MONEY. The Prize Money received for the Tournament will be split 50% for the Big Fish event, and the remaining 50% will be for the Blind Bogey event.So if just 200 people entered the Tournament, the total Prize Money would be $4,000.00.$2,000 would be for the Big Fish event and $2,000 would be for the Blind Bogey. If more than 200 enter, the Prize Money will grow larger!  All Prize Money will be paid in the form of CASH!!

BIG FISH EVENT: WEIGH-IN CUT-OFF IS 2:00pm SHARP!! 

The Four (4)Heaviest Trout weighed in BEFORE the weigh-in cut-off time of 2:00pm will be declared the WINNERS. Each Contestant may weigh in ONLY ONE Big Trout during the Event. Once you have weighed in your BIG FISH, you may NOT weigh in a larger fish later. You can weigh in your fish any time after the Tournament Director is prepared weigh fish in, usually around 10am. A fin will be clipped on all fish weighed in the BIG FISH Event and your photo will be taken. In the event of a tie, the first fish weighed in, wins the tie. There will be NO RE-WEIGHS, once the weight is recorded, the weight is FINAL. All fish will be weighed on the Tournament scale ONLY. The Tournament Director will thoroughly inspect all four of heaviest fish to make sure that they are fish freshly caught the day of the Tournament, and may also scan the fish with a metal detector to verify the accuracy of the weight of the fish. The Tournament Director’s decisions on all weights and qualifying fish are FINAL.

First Place         Receives 40% of the total Big Fish Prize Money. Based on 200 Participants = $800.00 CASH

Second Place     Receives 30% of the total Big Fish Prize Money. Based on 200 Participants = $600.00 CASH

Third Place        Receives 20% of the total Big Fish Prize Money. Based on 200 Participants = $400.00 CASH

BLIND BOGEY EVENT: WEIGH-IN CUT-OFF IS 2:30pm SHARP!!

Be in the Weigh-In Line by 2:30 SHARP for the Blind Bogey. You will be given a ticket with the weight of the fish you weigh in. A duplicate ticket stub with the same weight will be placed into drawing bucket. Ten (10) random weight numbers will be drawn from that bucket. Save this ticket and present it if your weight number is called out.

Ten (10) Winners will be selected by the weight of the fish the Contestants weigh in, and will split the Blind Bogey Prize Money, each receiving one 10th of the Prize Money. Based upon 200 Participants = $200.00 each!Any of the three BIG FISH Winners may ALSO enter their winning fish weights into the BLIND BOGEY Event.

You may weigh in one fish, or any combination of fishup to five. All fish you weigh must be fish you personally caught. You may not share or borrow other fish you did not catch to obtain your Blind Bogey weight.

The Tournament Director will call out the randomly selected weight numbers drawn from the bucket one at a time. If there is a tie, because two or more Contestants have the same weight numbers, the game “Rock Paper Scissors” will be played by the tied contestants to determine the final winner. The Tournament Director will explain and supervise the “Rock Paper Scissors” elimination game, and declare the final winner of the tied Contestants. You MUST be present to win. Claiming a prize of another person is NOT PERMITTED. The weight on your ticket must match the recorded weight for your name.

GENERAL FISHING RULES:

1. ONLY TROUT ARE ELIGIBLE      FOR THE EVENT.
2. TRADING FISH,      TEAM FISHING, GIVING FISH TO SOMEONE TO WEIGH-IN, WHO DID NOT ACTUALLY      CATCH THE FISH, IS PROHIBITED AND WILL VOID THAT FISHERMAN’S PARTICIPATION      IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALONG WITH THE PERSON GIVING THE FISH.
3. The fish must be      legally caught, using no more than two fishing rods per fisherman. No more      than two hooks can be used on each rod. The fish must be caught by the      fish actively taking the bait, lure or jig in its mouth, and not snagged      or netted.
4. Catch and Release      or Culling for larger fish or a larger limit, is prohibited.
5. Violation of any      Derby rules will make the Fisherman ineligible to participate in the Event      or receive a payout. If violations of rules are observed, the violations      must be reported immediately when witnessed, to the Tournament Director so      timely investigation, decision and actions can be taken. Reporting a      violation in an un-timely or in an after the fact manor, and or after a      payoff has been made will NOT reverse any payoff or the decided outcome.  The Tournament Director’s decision on      all issues, including the decision to investigate or not investigate any      reported violation(s), will be made solely and unilaterally buy the      Tournament Director and the Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Tournaments and the competition to win prizes can unfortunately bring out the worst in some people. We hold these events with the hope that everyone will conduct themselves as true “Sportsmen”, help each other, and have fun. Anyone causing problems during the Event, disqualified from the Event, or not following the Lake Rules will be eliminated from the Tournament and asked to leave the Lake. NO REFUNDS will be given for either the Lake Entrance Fee or the Tournament Entry Fee, for those who are asked to leave the Lake.

By BUYING IN to the Event, you acknowledge that you have read and fully understand the Details and Rules of the Tournament and agree to be bound by such terms and conditions.

     The big trout action at Santa Ana River Lakes continues to delight anglers at this popular Orange County water, and there was a 19-pound rainbow and two at 17 pounds to pace the big fish bite this past week.

     While the trout action at Corona Lake has continues to be excellent, it was a pair of hefty sturgeon that stole the headlines this past week.
     The biggest was a 35-pounder landed by the team of Jose and Issac Monroy, Corona, while fishing Power Nuggets on four-pound test in Bait Shop Cove. A 30-pound sturgeon was caught by Kirk Knalson, Corona, while fishing Power Bait on six-pound test.
     The biggest trout reported this were a pair of “mere” 8 3/4-pound rainbows. Lakes’ staff used the term “mere” because it was one of the first week’s this season when a rainbow over 15 pounds hasn’t been the biggest fish of the week.
     Rick Peterson, Corona, used a nightcrawler to land his 8 3/4-pounder fishing from shore, while Alex Breton, Seal Beach, was fishing from his float tube and a jig to landed his 8 3/4-pound rainbow. A typical limit was posted by Ruben Perez, Steven Bubalcava, along with Louis and Junior Azevado, all Lake Elsinore. The four anglers had 15 trout totaling 16 1/2-pounds and the big fish was a four-pounder. The four anglers were fishing PowerBait from shore.
     Big trout topping 10 pounds are still included in each week’s trout plant at Corona Lake, while the bulk of the fish are nice, stringer-filling one to two-pound trout. Some Lightning Trout are still showing from the plant two weeks ago. Overall, the bite has been very good, but more and more of the trout are showing from deeper, cooler water, making the best action for boat or tube anglers. The hot bite has continued to be on floating dough baits of just about any brand rolled in the new Hatchery Dust, with Power Mice Tails, small trout worms, small jigs, and inflated nightcrawlers all close seconds.

     The trout action has continued to be excellent at Santa Ana River Lakes, and a bonus plant of Lightning Trout this past week made for a lot of happy anglers with full stringers of pink-meated fish. Trophy rainbows topping 10 pounds also continue to be a component of each week’s huge trout plants.

     Corona Lake continues to crank out nice limits of rainbow trout averaging from one to two pounds, but good numbers of colorful Lightning Trout and some huge trout spiced up the bite this past week.
     The biggest fish was a 17 1/4-pounder landed by Kenny Russell of Wildomar, while Keith Yamashita, Walnut, caught a 16-pounder fishing salmon roe from the dam shoreline.
     With the 24-hour fishing this past Friday and Saturday, many families took advantage of the all-night pass and had nice 15-fish stringers. Denise and Gisselle Saucedo, Sante Fe Springs, had a nice mixed 15-fish stringer of rainbows and Lightning trout up to 4 1/2 pounds fishing dough bait rolled in Hatchery Dust at the dam from shore. Dave Halfacre, West Covina, landed five Lightning Trout on chartreuse PowerBait from the shore and his best fish was a 3 1/4-pounder.
     Power Mice Tails and any of the floating dough baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust additive have been the hot baits at Corona again this past week, with orange and chartreuse the hot colors. Small trout worms, small jigs, and inflated nightcrawlers are also good bets for getting a limit.
     The warmer weather has driven the fish a little deeper most of the day. This means the boat and float tube anglers are getting limits from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel and far shoreline in those deeper water spots. Shore anglers are seeing the best bite from cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam, and long casts have been necessary to get the baits into deeper water after the early morning flurry of action on shallower fish.
     There are huge plants each week, and all stocks include trophy-quality rainbows topping 10 pounds.

        The big fish in this past Saturday’s Lip RipperZ Hatchery Dust 50/50 Tournament was a huge 16-pound, seven-ounce rainbow landed by Jay Lamori of West Covina while fishing a green Lip RipperZ jig near the boat dock. It was the biggest trout of the week at Santa Ana River Lakes.

     The biggest rainbow reported was a 13-pounder caught by Calvin Droege, Mission Viejo, while fishing a green trout plastic on the south end of the lake. Victor Pardo, Corona, had an 11 1/2-pounder on an orange worm. Some typical limits include the five-fish catch made by Chris Mendoza, Pomona, that weighed 9 1/4-pounds and included a four-pounder. He was fishing small jigs from his float tube. Fred Boyce, Los Angeles, bought a pair of permits and took home 10 rainbows that totaled 14 pounds fishing chartreuse PowerBait. Jesse Aaf, Fullerton, had a pair of five fish limits this past week tossing orange Mice Tails at the dam.

Corona Lake cranks out
another 18-pound rainbow
     For the second week in a row, Corona Lake has produced trout over 18 pounds. Last week a pair of Sierra Bows over 18 pounds were caught during the Lip RipperZ Hatchery Dust tournament, and this week Miguel Monteleon, West Covina, landed an 18-pound, 10-ounce rainbow fishing from shore with Hatchery Dust added to a floating bait.
     Mike Covel, Yucaipa, lande3d a 16 1/2-pound rainbow fishing PowerBait with Hatchery Dust to top off his five-fish limit, while Alex Brenton, landed rainbows at 15 1/2-pounds and 10 pounds fishing from a float tube with small jigs to cap his limit. Todd, Ross, and Lawrence Stevens, all Murrieta, had 15 rainbows for 35 pounds total, including a 15-pound Sierra Bow, while fishing trout worms from a boat. Ernie Lastimado, Chula Vista, caught a 14 1/4-pounder from the dam shoreline with chartreuse PowerBait. 
     The best bite for shore anglers is still from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam. Boat and float tubes are getting most of their fish from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel, with the area off the boats docks especially good this past week. Floating dough baits rolled in Hatchery Dust has been the hot bait, but garlic-scented nightcrawlers, Power Mice and other small trout plastics, and small trout jigs have also been good bets.

There have been over eight tons of trophy rainbows topping 10 pounds planted in Corona Lake and its sister waters Santa Ana River Lakes and Anaheim Lake (during the short two weeks it was open in October) this trout season.
     Corona Lake is open on a seven-days-a-week schedule. Fishing is allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $25. Seniors pay only $23, with a $20 special on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $12. The 24-hour passes are only sold the weekend nearest the full moon. The 24-hour passes cost $75 and have a 15 fish limit. An angler can bring his wife and up to three kids 17 and under and all can help fill the 15-fish limit on one of these passes, and camping is free at Corona with a 24-hour pass.      The big fish was a 19-pound, 11-ounce rainbow caught by Xavier Barriga, Hesperia, while fishing with a white trout worm from a boat. Second place went to Kory Allen, Garden Grove, with a 19-pound, seven-ounce rainbow caught from a float tube at the tree line on a Litl RipperZ jig, and third place was an 18-pound, two-ounce trout caught by Bob Barr, Tustin, also on a Litl RipperZ jig from a float tube at the dam. The fourth place fish, and the final fish in the money, was a 14-pound, five-ounce rainbow landed by Chuck Yansom, Lake Elsinore, landed on floating bait rolled in Hatchery Dust from shore at J.D.’s Point.

     The parade of huge rainbows and nice stringers of pan-sized trout continues to pour out of Santa Ana River Lakes.
     The big fish this past week was a mammoth 19 1/4-pound rainbow landed by Armando Ayala, Pico Rivera, on rainbow floating boat at the Pump House on four-pound test line. Nick Makshanoff, Whittier, landed an 18-pounder on two-pound test fishing chartreuse floating boat from shore at the Bubble Hole, and it took him 20 minutes to landed the fish. A 15-pound trout was caught by Steven Yeh, La Puente, off the Sandy Beach on chartreuse floating bait.
     There were three rainbows in the 14-pound class, including a 14-pound, 10-ouncer landed by Doc Molthen, Cypress, on corn yellow PowerBait on four-pound test at Levitz’ Corner. A 14 1/4-pounder was caught by Sam Tamtan, Cerritos, on a mini jig, while John Kingkeo, Buena Park, landed a 14-pound, two-ouncer on a yellow and white jig at Johnny’s Corner on two-pound test.
     The trophy Sierra Bows from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms continue to be a component of each week’s massive plant that consists mostly of one to two-pound rainbows. The giant trout are extremely popular with the anglers and have been running from 10 to nearly 20 pounds. Most anglers are getting stringers of one to two-pounders and many have a bigger trout as a kicker fish.
     The action has been best on a wide variety of baits and lures, but the most consistent bite has continued to be on floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust additive. Power Mice Tails or the home-made equivalents with plastic or nightcrawler tails are close seconds, and a lot of rainbows continue to show on small trout plastics and trout jigs. Bright colors continue to be the best bet with any of the baits or lures.
     Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven-days-a-week. Fishing is allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $25. Seniors pay only $23 with a $20 special on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $12. There are 24-hour passes offered on Friday and Saturday night on weekends nearest the full moon each month for $75. You can pay your BUY IN fee TWO ways. 1) Through our ON-LINE STORE, at www.fishinglakes.com/store prior to the Friday before the event by 8:00 pm, or 2) at the Tournament Registration Area BEFORE entering the Lake, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you purchase through our ON LINE STORE, make sure to print your receipt and BRING IT WITH YOU to the Tournament Registration Area. Online purchasers (with receipt in hand) can arrive at the Lake after the 8:00am CUT-OFF and still participate.  You will be given an arm band, with your name on it, to prove your entry into the Tournament at the Tournament Registration Area. This arm band is good for both the BIG FISH and the BLIND BOGEY events. This arm band must be worn at all times. If you take it off or give it to another person, you and the person you gave it to will be automatically disqualified. PRIZE MONEY:

100% of your BUY IN fee is considered the PRIZE MONEY. The Prize Money received for the Tournament will be split 50% for the Big Fish event, and the remaining 50% will be for the Blind Bogey event.So if just 200 people entered the Tournament, the total Prize Money would be $4,000.00.$2,000 would be for the Big Fish event and $2,000 would be for the Blind Bogey. The Four (4)Heaviest Trout weighed in BEFORE the weigh-in cut-off time of 2:00pm will be declared the WINNERS. Each Contestant may weigh in ONLY ONE Big Trout during the Event. Once you have weighed in your BIG FISH, you may NOT weigh in a larger fish later. You can weigh in your fish any time after the Tournament Director is prepared weigh fish in, usually around 10am. A fin will be clipped on all fish weighed in the BIG FISH Event and your photo will be taken. In the event of a tie, the first fish weighed in, wins the tie. There will be NO RE-WEIGHS, once the weight is recorded, the weight is FINAL. All fish will be weighed on the Tournament scale ONLY. The Tournament Director will thoroughly inspect all four of heaviest fish to make sure that they are fish freshly caught the day of the Tournament, and may also scan the fish with a metal detector to verify the accuracy of the weight of the fish. Be in the Weigh-In Line by 2:30 SHARP for the Blind Bogey. You will be given a ticket with the weight of the fish you weigh in. A duplicate ticket stub with the same weight will be placed into drawing bucket. Ten (10) random weight numbers will be drawn from that bucket. Save this ticket and present it if your weight number is called out.

Ten (10) Winners will be selected by the weight of the fish the Contestants weigh in, and will split the Blind Bogey Prize Money, each receiving one 10th of the Prize Money. Based upon 200 Participants = $200.00 each!Any of the three BIG FISH Winners may ALSO enter their winning fish weights into the BLIND BOGEY Event.

You may weigh in one fish, or any combination of fishup to five. All fish you weigh must be fish you personally caught. You may not share or borrow other fish you did not catch to obtain your Blind Bogey weight.

The Tournament Director will call out the randomly selected weight numbers drawn from the bucket one at a time. If there is a tie, because two or more Contestants have the same weight numbers, the game “Rock Paper Scissors” will be played by the tied contestants to determine the final winner. The Tournament Director will explain and supervise the “Rock Paper Scissors” elimination game, and declare the final winner of the tied Contestants. You MUST be present to win. Claiming a prize of another person is NOT PERMITTED. The weight on your ticket must match the recorded weight for your name.

GENERAL FISHING RULES:

1. ONLY TROUT ARE ELIGIBLE      FOR THE EVENT.
2. TRADING FISH,      TEAM FISHING, GIVING FISH TO SOMEONE TO WEIGH-IN, WHO DID NOT ACTUALLY      CATCH THE FISH, IS PROHIBITED AND WILL VOID THAT FISHERMAN’S PARTICIPATION      IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALONG WITH THE PERSON GIVING THE FISH.
3. The fish must be      legally caught, using no more than two fishing rods per fisherman. No more      than two hooks can be used on each rod. The fish must be caught by the      fish actively taking the bait, lure or jig in its mouth, and not snagged      or netted.
4. Catch and Release      or Culling for larger fish or a larger limit, is prohibited.
5. Violation of any      Derby rules will make the Fisherman ineligible to participate in the Event      or receive a payout. If violations of rules are observed, the violations      must be reported immediately when witnessed, to the Tournament Director so      timely investigation, decision and actions can be taken. Reporting a      violation in an un-timely or in an after the fact manor, and or after a      payoff has been made will NOT reverse any payoff or the decided outcome.  The Tournament Director’s decision on      all issues, including the decision to investigate or not investigate any      reported violation(s), will be made solely and unilaterally buy the      Tournament Director and the Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Tournaments and the competition to win prizes can unfortunately bring out the worst in some people. We hold these events with the hope that everyone will conduct themselves as true “Sportsmen”, help each other, and have fun. Anyone causing problems during the Event, disqualified from the Event, or not following the Lake Rules will be eliminated from the Tournament and asked to leave the Lake. NO REFUNDS will be given for either the Lake Entrance Fee or the Tournament Entry Fee, for those who are asked to leave the Lake.

There was also the change of one of the huge super trophy rainbows that have been showing each week since the beginning of trout season. The top rainbow reported this week was a 17-pounder caught by Angel Contreras, Anaheim, while fishing green PowerBait at the Bubble Hole. Kory Allen, Garden Grove, landed his personal best-ever rainbow, a 16-pound, five-ounce rainbow on a green Lip RipperZ jig in Chris’ Pond. There were a pair of 15 1/2-pound rainbows caught. Ayaz Uddin, Anaheim Hills, was fishing chartreuse PowerBait with Hatchery Dust in Chris’ Pond to land his 15 1/2-pounder, while Alex Ortega Sr. and Alex Jr., both Anaheim, teamed up to land the other 15 1/2-pounder that was hooked on a Rapala. There were also two 14 1/4-pound trout caught, one by Ray Sell, Cerritos on rainbow PowerBait in Chris’ Pond, and the other by Bill Wright, Anaheim, on a chartreuse Power Mice Tail near the boat dock. Bonnie Henderson, Long Beach, landed a 10-pound rainbow on green PowerBait off La Palma Point.

Huge Hatchery Dust Tournament
set for Saturday at Corona Lake,
trout action is simply off the hook
Amid an excellent trout season, Corona Lake will host the huge Lip RipperZ Hatchery Dust Takeover tournament this coming Saturday, March 2. This is a 50-50 tournament with a 100 percent payback of all entry fee money into two parts of the event. The first part of the event is a traditional big fish competition with payouts to the top four heaviest trout. The second part of the event is a blind bogey event with the 10 anglers catching trout weighing the same or closest to the 10 bling bogey weights will win.
Tournament entry fee is $20, in addition to the usual Corona Lake fishing fee. There is also $250 in added money if the top four trout are caught on any Lip RipperZ product, and the first 150 anglers who enter the event and buy a bottle of the new Hatchery Dust product at the tackle shop or have a receipt from the purchase of Dust at a local retailer will get a free Hatchery Dust t-shirt.

The tournament is being staged during some of the best trout action of the season at Corona Lake, and plants of Lightning Trout last week and bonus plants of trophy fish this week are staged to make this one of Southern California’s best fishing events of the year.
The big fish of the week was a 19 pounder caught by Frank Hernandez of La Puente using a black rooster tail from a float tube.  Another big 15-pounder caught by Doug Whiting, Glendora, while fishing a yellow and green Nitro worm near the boat launch for his best-trout ever. A 14 1/2-pounder was caught by Jimmy Shelton, Orange, on a Thomas Buoyant in the back of the lake by the flooded trees, while Phoeuy Nguon, Moreno Valley, had a 13-pound rainbow on a jig off the shore near the boat dock. Todd Stevens along with Ross and Gerald Lawrence, all Corona, topped off a pair of 24-hour permits with a 13-pound rainbows fishing jigs at the dam. The 30-fish mixed stringer of rainbows and Lightning Trout weighed in at 50 pounds. There were also 12 1/2-pound rainbows reported by Ross Lawrence, Corona, on green PowerBait and Tim Haley, Las Vegas, on a jig from his float tube.
Overall, the bite has remained excellent with a lot of limits of one to two pound trout on floating dough baits rolled in Hatchery Dust, garlic-scented nightcrawlers, Power Mice and other small trout plastics, and small trout jigs. The best bite for shore anglers is still from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam. Boat and float tubes are getting most of their fish from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel, with the area off the boats docks especially good this past week.

Kevin Slape, Upland, topped off his 27-pound, one-ounce, five-fish limit with 14 1/2-pound rainbow a blue Mirror Shad. Another 14 1/2-pounder was caught by Glenn Matsushita, Gardena, on a green crankbait at the Bubble Hole. George Sergeant, La Habra, caught a 14-pounder on a Power Worm off La Palma Point, and Steve Jacobs, Norwalk, caught a 12 1/4-pound rainbow on rainbow PowerBait in the old Three Pipes area of the lake. Melvin Lopez, Long Beach, landed an 11-pound, 15-ounce rainbow orange PowerBait with Hatchery Dust near the boat dock in the big lake, and a 10-pounder was caught by Adam Jen, Santa Monica, on a nightcrawler at the pumphouse.

Alex Esteban, Moreno Valley, had a three-pounder topping his five-fish catch on green and orange trout plastics.
     The big news this week is the season’s first plant of Lightning Trout. These colorful, pink-meated fighters will go this Thursday, in addition to the regular stock of catchable and trophy grade rainbows.
     The best shore action hasn’t changed much in recent weeks, with the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam providing good action. Anglers fishing from boats or float tubes are getting most of their fish from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel. Six more trout over 15 pounds caught at Santa Ana River Lakes
There continues to be a steady procession of giant rainbow trout being caught at Santa Ana River Lakes, and the overall trout bite is simply wide open with lots of limits of one to two-pound class trout being caught every day.
The big rainbow this past week was a 19 1/2-pounder caught by Bill Kamio, Westminster, fishing an orange Power Mouse in the dock area of the big lake. Kory Allen, Garden Grove, landed an 18.4-pound rainbow drop-shoting a plastic trout worm, while Trac Nguyen, Roland Heights, caught a 17-pounder on a Power Worm. Frank Guzman, Downey, topped of his four-fish catch with a 16-pound rainbow fishing a green jig on one day and landed a 15-pounder another day on a Sierra Slammer jig another day. Augie Smith, Irvine, landed a 15 1/2-pounder on yellow jig.
The best action continues to be on floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust additive or Power Mice Tails, trout plastics, and small trout jigs. Bright colors have been the best in the floating baits or lures this past week, with chartreuse and orange the hot colors.
Santa Ana continues to be get a huge plant of trout each Thursday that features tons of pan-sized rainbows along with a large component of bigger trout from five to 15-plus pounds — and there will be more trophy fish planted this week for the weekend tournament.
That tournament is the Lip RipperZ Hatchery Dust Challenge set for Saturday. This is another big fish/blind bogey 50-50 tournament with added money in the big fish category when the winning fish are caught with Hatchery Dust. These tournaments have become very popular at SARL because everyone has a shot at a share of the prize money with 10 different blind bogey cash awards totaling half of the entry fee pool, and then the biggest four trout divide up the other half of the entry fee pool. This means 100 percent of the entry fees are paid back to anglers in an every split between the big fish and blind bogey portions of the event. There is also added money if you catch one of the four biggest fish using Hatchery Dust. The entry fee is $20, in addition to the regular lake fishing fee, and more information and complete tournament rules are available at The Lakes website, www.fishinglakes.com.
Anglers should also mark off the following weekend on their calendars, too. That week, SARL will get a huge plant of Lightning Trout, one of the most popular trout planted at The Lakes each year. The plant will coincide with this month’s two 24-hour fishing days on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23. Anglers can purchase 24-hour passes those two nights for $75. With the family special, an angler can bring his or her spouse and three kids 17 years or younger on that $75 permit, and all can help catch the 15-fish limit. Camping at SARL is thrown in for free.

Trout bite remains hot at Corona Lake

Anglers continue to take home quality stringers of rainbow trout at Corona Lake. Five-fish limits of trout averaging from one to two pounds have been the norm for both shore and boat or float tube anglers over the past week, and the top fish was a 10 1/2-pounder caught by Jimmy Whirl, Temecula on green PowerBait. The best shore action has been from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam with the best action in the deeper water in this stretch. Anglers fishing from boats or float tubes are getting most of their fish from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel. Floating dough baits or Power Mice Tails rolled in the new Hatchery Dust, scent-doused nightcrawlers, small trout jigs and trout plastics have all been good baits for the trout. Francisco Alvarado and Jonathan Herrera, both Corona, had a pretty typical double limit of 10 trout that weighed in at 13 pounds and was topped off with a 2 1/2-pound rainbow. The stringer was caught on rainbow PowerBait near the boat dock. The catfish are little fished, but Steve and Victor Fimbres, from Mexico, had six catfish to five pounds from shore behind the bait shop with trout entrails. Heavy weekly plants of rainbows averaging around a pound are made each week, and those plants always have a hefty component of rainbows from five to eight pounds along with super trophies topping 10 pounds and going well up into the teens.      The biggest rainbow this past week was a 16-pounder landed by David Rochin, Fullerton, near the boat dock on a T.K. Jig and worm. John Bylsma, Ontario, landed a 15 1/2-pounder on chartreuse PowerBait off La Palma Point. Campbell McCormack, Ventura, was fishing chartreuse PowerBait to landed a 13 1/4-pound rainbow at the Bubble Hole, while Landon Radilla, El Monte, had an 11-pounder at the pumphouse, also on chartreuse PowerBait with Love Sauce. Ricardo Zepeda, Santa Ana, caught a 10 1/2-pounder on a mini jig in Chris’ Pond, and there were a pair of 10-pound rainbows. One by Dale Debraal, Orange, on Power Mice, and the other by Henry Serna on chartreuse Power Bait.

     It took an 18 1/2-pound rainbow to win the big fish portion of the 50/50 tournament held at Corona Lake this past Saturday. That trout was also the biggest fish of the week amid an excellent trout bite that had lots of limits of rainbows along with a steady procession of big trout.
     The big trout was caught by Santiago Palacios, West Covina, while fishing chartreuse PowerBait at the dam, but his 18 1/2-pounder was just one of a number of big rainbows caught over the week. Adrian Lecesne, Upland, landed a 16 1/2-pounder on a white trout plastic, and Bob Sawyer, Corona, landed a 16-pounder and a 13-pounder to top off a 10-trout stringer, all on PowerBait at the dam. Jeff Weaver, Riverside, had a 14 1/2-pound rainbow to top off his 26 1/2-pound limit on white mini jigs. Brian Holmes, Torrance, landed a 13 1/2-pound rainbow on small jigs off JD’s Point, and David Relly, Rialto, caught a 12 1/2-pound trout on an orange Nitro Worm from his float tube.

The Four (4) Heaviest Trout weighed in BEFORE the weigh-in cut-off time of 2:00pm will be declared the WINNERS. Each Contestant may weigh in ONLY ONE Big Trout during the Event. Once you have weighed in your BIG FISH, you may NOT weigh in a larger fish later. You can weigh in your fish any time after the Tournament Director is prepared weigh fish in, usually around 10am. A fin will be clipped on all fish weighed in the BIG FISH Event and your photo will be taken. In the event of a tie, the first fish weighed in, wins the tie. There will be NO RE-WEIGHS, once the weight is recorded, the weight is FINAL. All fish will be weighed on the Tournament scale ONLY. The Tournament Director will thoroughly inspect all four of heaviest fish to make sure that they are fish freshly caught the day of the Tournament, and may also scan the fish with a metal detector to verify the accuracy of the weight of the fish. BLIND BOGEY EVENT: WEIGH-IN CUT-OFF IS 2:30pm SHARP!!

Be in the Weigh-In Line by 2:30 SHARP for the Blind Bogey. You will be given a ticket with the weight of the fish you weigh in. A duplicate ticket stub with the same weight will be placed into drawing bucket. Ten (10) random weight numbers will be drawn from that bucket. Save this ticket and present it if your weight number is called out.

Ten (10) Winners will be selected by the weight of the fish the Contestants weigh in, and will split the Blind Bogey Prize Money, each receiving one 10th of the Prize Money. Based upon 200 Participants = $200.00 each!Any of the three BIG FISH Winners may ALSO enter their winning fish weights into the BLIND BOGEY Event.

You may weigh in one fish, or any combination of fishup to five. All fish you weigh must be fish you personally caught. You may not share or borrow other fish you did not catch to obtain your Blind Bogey weight.

The Tournament Director will call out the randomly selected weight numbers drawn from the bucket one at a time. If there is a tie, because two or more Contestants have the same weight numbers, the game “Rock Paper Scissors” will be played by the tied contestants to determine the final winner. The Tournament Director will explain and supervise the “Rock Paper Scissors” elimination game, and declare the final winner of the tied Contestants. You MUST be present to win. Claiming a prize of another person is NOT PERMITTED. The weight on your ticket must match the recorded weight for your name.

GENERAL FISHING RULES:

1.  ONLY TROUT ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE EVENT.

2.  FISH, TEAM FISHING, GIVING FISH TO SOMEONE TO WEIGH-IN, WHO DID NOT ACTUALLY CATCH THE FISH, IS PROHIBITED AND WILL VOID THAT FISHERMAN’S PARTICIPATION IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALONG WITH THE PERSON GIVING THE FISH.

3.  The fish must be legally caught, using no more than two fishing rods per fisherman. No more than two hooks can be used on each rod. The fish must be caught by the fish actively taking the bait, lure or jig in its mouth, and not snagged or netted.

4.  Catch and Release or Culling for larger fish or a larger limit, is prohibited.

5.  Violation of any Derby rules will make the Fisherman ineligible to participate in the Event or receive a payout. If violations of rules are observed, the violations must be reported immediately when witnessed, to the Tournament Director so timely investigation, decision and actions can be taken. Reporting a violation in an un-timely or in an after the fact manor, and or after a payoff has been made will NOT reverse any payoff or the decided outcome.  The Tournament Director’s decision on all issues, including the decision to investigate or not investigate any reported violation(s), will be made solely and unilaterally buy the Tournament Director and the Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Huge 19-pound rainbow tops trophy

Monster rainbow trout continued to pour out of Santa Ana River  Lakes over the past week in spite of rainy, wet weather, and the top  fish was a huge 19-pounder caught by Varian Virgen, Buena Park, fishing a mini jig.  The Lakes’ complex continues to get huge weekly plants of rainbow  trout that include trophy rainbows topping 10 pounds and tons of one to  two pounders to assure the bite is hot. Carlos Ortiz, Buena Park, landed an 18-pound rainbow fishing a pink trout worm on two pound test near the boat dock, and a 17-pound,  10-ouncer fish was landed by Ricky Henderson, Long Beach, on a pink  Berkley Mice Tail south of the Bubble Hole. Arturo Velazquez, Anaheim,  caught a 16 1/2-pounder on white PowerBait at the Bubble Hole, and Kevin Slape, Upland, had a 16-pounder on a Mirror Shad trolled from his  kayak. A 15 3/4-pounder was landed by Steve Zookwood, Baldwin Park, on a white Mice Tail. There were 15 1/2-pounders caught by Al Rotta, Lomita, and Ricardo Zepeda, Santa Paula, and a 15 1/4-pounder was caught by  Kerry Gayagasw, Lake Elsinore. A 15-pounder was landed by Sai Leang,  Long Beach, and a 14 1/2-pounder was caught by Keith Padranos, Lake  Forest. Trout at 10 1/2-pounds were landed by Alfonso Andrade, Los  Angeles, and Joe Romero, Placentia, and a 10-pounder was landed by Henry Manzo, Pico Rivera. While trophy trout have been landed daily over the past week, it is the consistent action on stringer-filling one to two-pound rainbows  that has been remarkable. Five-fish limits have been the rule for  anglers fishing light leaders and the right rigs. The bite has been best on floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust additive, but as many trout are showing on the Power Mice Tails, trout plastics, and small  trout jigs for anglers experienced in fishing these baits. Bright colors have been the best in the floating baits or lures this past week with  the pinks, whites, and orange the hot colors. Rainbow and chartreuse are close seconds. The next Big Fish/Blind Bogey 50-50 tournament is tentative slated for Saturday, Feb. 16. The entry fee is $20, in addition to the  regular lake fishing fee, but 100 percent of the entry fees are paid  back in an even split between the big fish portion of the tournament  (top four places win half the entry fee pool) and the blind bogey  portion (divided among 10 anglers catching fish nearest to the blind  bogey weights). Big fish and lot of nice stringers have been the norm for Corona  Lake trout anglers over the past week as huge weekly plants continue.

Shon Robert,  Riverside, had a limit of rainbows topped with a 12-pounder, while Steve Ortiz, landed a nine-pound rainbow on garlic PowerBait.

BLIND BOGEY EVENT: WEIGH-IN CUT-OFF IS 2:30pm SHARP!!

Ten (10) random weight numbers will be chosen by a computerized random number generator. The numbers will range between the lowest recorded weight and the highest recorded weight entered into the Blind Bogey. We ELIMINATED the two pound minimum, PLUS any species of fish caught may be entered into the Blind Bogey.

Ten (10) Winners will be selected by the weight of the fish the Contestants weigh in, and will split the Blind Bogey Prize Money, each receiving one 10th of the Prize Money. Based upon 200 Participants = $200.00 each! Any of the three BIG FISH Winners may ALSO enter their winning fish weights into the BLIND BOGEY Event.

You may weigh in one fish, or any combination of fishup to five. All fish you weigh must be fish you personally caught. You may not share or borrow other fish you did not catch to obtain your Blind Bogey weight.

Once you weigh in your fish, your weight and your name will be recorded and you will be given a ticket with the weight written on it. Save this ticket and present it if a number is called out that could potentially make you a winner.

The Tournament Director will call out the randomly selected weight numbers one at a time. The person coming closest to the selected weight, without going over, will win. If there is a tie, because two or more Contestants have the same weight numbers, the game “Rock Paper Scissors” will be played by the tied contestants to determine the final winner. The Tournament Director will explain and supervise the “Rock Paper Scissors” elimination game,and declare the final winner of the tied Contestants. You may ONLY win ONE TIME in the Blind Bogey Event. You MUST be present to win. Claiming a prize of another person is NOT PERMITTED. The weight on your ticket must match the recorded weight for your name.

GENERAL FISHING RULES:

1.  ONLY TROUT ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE BIG FISH PORTION OF THE EVENT. ANY SPECIES CAN BE WEIGHED INTO THE BLIND BOGEY.

2.  TRADING FISH, TEAM FISHING, GIVING FISH TO SOMEONE TO WEIGH-IN, WHO DID NOT ACTUALLY CATCH THE FISH, IS PROHIBITED AND WILL VOID THAT FISHERMAN’S PARTICIPATION IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALONG WITH THE PERSON GIVING THE FISH.

3.  The fish must be legally caught, using no more than two fishing rods per fisherman. No more than two hooks can be used on each rod. The fish must be caught by the fish actively taking the bait, lure or jig in its mouth, and not snagged or netted.

4.  Catch and Release or Culling for larger fish or a larger limit, is prohibited.

5.  Violation of any Derby rules will make the Fisherman ineligible to participate in the Event or receive a payout. If violations of rules are observed, the violations must be reported immediately when witnessed, to the Tournament Director so timely investigation, decision and actions can be taken. Reporting a violation in an un-timely or in an after the fact manor, and or after a payoff has been made will NOT reverse any payoff or the decided outcome.  The Tournament Director’s decision on all issues, including the decision to investigate or not investigate any reported violation(s), will be made solely and unilaterally buy the Tournament Director and the Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Tournaments and the competition to win prizes can unfortunately bring out the worst in some people. We hold these events with the hope that everyone will conduct themselves as true “Sportsmen”, help each other, and have fun. Anyonecausing problems during the Event, disqualified from the Event, or not following the Lake Rules will be eliminated from the Tournament and asked to leave the Lake. NO REFUNDS will be given for either the Lake Entrance Fee or the Tournament Entry Fee, for those who are asked to leave the Lake.

Santa Ana River Lake is SoCal’s
top producer of huge rainbow trout
Santa Ana River Lakes had continued to produce more big rainbow trout than any other lake in Southern California, and probably the whole county over the past week. There have been at least 10 rainbows topping 12 pounds reported at the lake’s tackle shop, and at least that many more trout have gone home in ice chests without the anglers bothering to stop by and report their catches, according to lake staff.
“We promised that our trout season this year was going to be like to good old days, and we’re making good on that promise,” said Craig Elliott. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this many big trout being caught at Santa Ana.”
The biggest trout reported this past week was an 18-pound, 12-ounce rainbow landed by Tramel Kerl, Los Angeles, with salmon peach PowerBait rolled in the new Hatchery Dust while fishing from shore at Pump House Corner.
Jesse Garrido, La Habra, fishing fishing a chartreuse dough bait at the Bubble Hole for a 16 1/2-pound rainbow, while Glen Matsushita, Gardena, landed a 16-pounder at the Bubble Hole, also on a dough bait. Chris Edwards, Tustin, fished Chris’ Pond with a nightcrawler to land a 15 1/2-pounder, while at 15-pounder, one-ounce rainbow was caught by Gabriel Estrada, Garden Grove, on rainbow PowerBait and Hatchery Dust from his float tube at the Bubble Hole. A rainbow at 14 1/2-pounds was caught by Gary Patterson, Hacienda Heights, on a white Mouse Tail off La Palma Point, and Joshua Griswold, Woodland Hills, landed a 14 1/4-pound trout at the Bubble Hole, also on a Mouse Tail. Keith Hyun, Anaheim, was fishing a jig off the sandy beach to land a 13 ½-pound rainbow, and Melchor Martinez, Los Angeles, used a nightcrawler in Chris’ Pond for a 13 1/4-pounder. A trout at 12 3/4-pounds was caught by Gio Altamiraano, Santa Ana, on a white Trout King jig, and a 12 1/4-pounder was landed by Austreberto Arriaga, Monrovia, using PowerBait and Hatchery Dust.
But the bite is more than just about big fish. Most anglers are getting stringers of rainbows averaging about a pound each with lots of kicker fish from two to six pounds or more. David and Steven Rochin, Placentia, had 10 rainbows for 27.1 pounds fishing Mice Tails in orange and green near the boat dock. Jose Velasquez, Felix Martinez, and Eric Vergadura, Cerritos and Huntington Park, had 14 rainbows total and the stringer weighed 15 1/4 pounds.
The best trout action has been on floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust additive, but the usual array of small jigs, trout plastics — especially the Power Mice Tails — and real nightcrawlers are also catching a lot of trout. The rainbows are showing all around the lake complete with the fish well distributed and cruising around in schools.
The warm weather has also made for good catfish action in the Catfish Lake and main lakes. There were bonus plants of catfish two weeks ago, but only a few anglers cashed in on the tons of whiskerfish in the complex. One was Victor Estrada, Garden Grove, who landed four catfish to six pounds on nightcrawlers in the Catfish Lake.
Trophy rainbow trout continue to be a major component of each Thursday plant, and anglers can view to videos of the fish going in at The Lakes’ website. In addition to the trophies, thousands of pounds of pan-sized trout averaging about a pound or better are also planted each week.
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven-days-a-week. Fishing is allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $25. Corona Lake trout bite stays
hot with hefty weekly plants
Many anglers continue to report limit-style fishing at Corona Lake thanks to hefty weekly plants of rainbows at this popular western Riverside County water. Those plants also continue to include trophy rainbows as part of the weekly stocks.
The big fish reported this past week was a 14-pound, two-ounce rainbow landed as part of a 20 1/2-pound, six-fish stringer weighed in by Terry Boetger and Jeremy Valenzuela, both Mira Loma, while fishing PowerBait at the dam. Tom Cockshuh, Ontario, landed a 12-pound rainbow on yellow PowerBait from a boat just off the boat docks. A 12-pounder was also the best fish in a five-fish, 18 1/4-pound stringer posted by Ralph Accurso, Moreno Valley, off J.D.’s Point on a pink and white Nitro Worm.
More typical were five-fish limits of trout averaging from one to two pounds, and many stringers had nice kicker fish. Josh Stark, Murrieta, landed five rainbows totaling 14 pounds, including a five-pounder, while fishing Mice Tails from his float tube. Shon Roberts, Riverside, landed five trout for 15 pounds and his best was a four-pounder, all caught on B-Line jigs from a boat. J.B. Gierlich, Riverside, had five rainbows for 13 1/2 pounds on B-Line Jigs, and his best was a four pounder caught from the cove behind the bait shop.
Shore anglers continue to score from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam, while the boat and float tube anglers are getting most of their fish from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel. A huge 20 ¾-pound rainbow trout was caught by Tom Hayes of Carmichael while fishing at Santa Ana River Lakes this past week, highlighting a week filled with monster rainbows at this popular Orange County water.      Hayes’ trout was caught from shore near the pumphouse on a nightcrawler-marshmallow combination doused with Eagle Claw garlic Gravy, but it was just one of a steady procession of big trout. Alex Ortega of Anaheim, had a pair of rainbows that weighed in at 18 and 15 pounds, both were landed on Lucky Cross lures at Levitz’ Corner. Chuck Ashley, Anaheim, caught a 16 ½-pounder on green PowerBait near the boat dock, while rainbows at 16 ¼-pounder were caught by Dick Bennett, Long Beach, and Dennis Johnson, Whittier. Bennett was fishing chartreuse garlic PowerBait and Johnson was using a chartreuse Power Worm.      There were two trout in the 15-pound class. The first was a 15 ½-pounder caught by Varion Virgen, Buena Park, on a smoke-colored mini jig at Levitz’ Corner, while Mike Brown, Covina, used a nightcrawler off La Palma Point to land his 15-pounder. Jim Anderson, La Puente, landed trout at 13 ¾ pounds and 10 pounds on chartreuse PowerBait, and Michael Najera, Walnut, was tossing a spoon off the sandy beach to catch a 13 ¼-pound rainbow. Gary Janssen, Corona, caught a 10 ¾-pounder on a yellow and orange trout worm, and Alex Martinez, Chino, landed a 10 ¼-pounder on a gold Kastmaster. Steve Perreira, Buena Park, fished a nightcrawler at the Bubble Hole for his 10 pounder.      There will be a huge 50-50 Big Fish, Blind Bogey Tournament this Saturday. Entry fee is $20 (in addition to lake entrance) and there is a 100 percent payback of the entry fees divided equally into the big fish and blind bogey categories so everyone has a change to win. The big fish pool will be divided among the three biggest trout landed, while there will be 10 blind bogey winners. While most anglers have been focused on Corona Lake’s exceptional trout action, a 53 ½-pound created a huge buzz at the Riverside County lake this past week. The huge catfish was caught and released by Pedro Pevez of Whittier from shore and drew a crowd.      It remains trout that are providing most of the action and excitement at Corona Lake, and the two biggest trout reported this week were landed on the same bait combination: A Berkley mouse tail rolled in the new Lip RipperZ Hatchery Dust. The biggest rainbow of the week was a 15 ½-pounder caught by Josh Stark of Murrieta from his float tube on that magic bait combo, while Flory Medina, Corona, landed a 13 ¾-pound rainbow fishing from the shoreline behind the tackle shop on the same bait. Alex Saucedo, Menifee, caught a 10 ¼-pound trout on chartreuse PowerBait with garlic Gravy fishing at the dam.      The bite remains exceptional with limits of one to two-pound rainbows pouring out of the lake. Mike Brocamonte, Covina, landed five rainbows for 13 pounds on orange PowerBait with Hatchery Dust. Wes Wright, Fullerton, had five rainbows for 12 ½ pounds, including a five-pounder, on nightcrawlers with Hatchery Dust, and Patrich Gengooriyan, Burbank, had a 10 ½-pound, five-fish stringer that was topped off with a 5 ½-pounder, all caught on green PowerBait with Hatchery Dust. Josh and J.B. Gierlich, both Riverside, had 10 rainbows for 13 ½-pounds on B-Line Jigs with garlic Gravy. Greg and Jose Sanchez along with Jose Compas, all Buena Park, landed 15 rainbows for a 25 ½-pound stringer, all on Mice Tails with Hatchery Dust.      Overall, the action has been best for shore anglers fishing from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam, while the boat and float tube anglers are scoring from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel.      The Rose Parade only lasts one day, but the parade of rose and crimson rainbow trout out of Santa Ana River Lakes has been non-stop for three weeks, and the lake’s dedicated band of anglers are still marching to the beautiful music big trout make when they strip line off reels against the drag.
     The biggest rainbow reported during the first week of 2013 was a 15-pound, two-ounce trout caught by Frank Bin, Las Crescenta, while fishing a gold Kastmaster off the east shore of the big lake. Alex Escobar, La Habra, landed a 15-pounder fishing rainbow PowerBait at the pump house from shore. Ernie Agame, San Pedro, landed a 13 1/2-pounder at the Bubble Hole on chartreuse PowerBait, while Bonnie Henderson, Long Beach, caught a 13 1/4-pound rainbow on a nightcrawler at the road. Mitchell Deckert, Riverside, was fishing a white jig just 15 feet from shore to hook and land a 13-pounder at the Bubble Hole. There were 12-pound rainbows landed by Drew Navarro, Orange, on a Lip RipperZ jig near the boat dock, and by Lawrence Bland, Ontario, on a silver Kastmaster off the north shore of the big lake.
     The big rainbows are showing up every day, and they are a component of the huge trout stockings each Thursday.      The rainbow trout action at Corona Lake has been nothing short of exceptional this season. Limits of trout have been reported by shore anglers from the cove behind bait shop all the way to the dam, while the boat and float tube anglers are scoring from the dam to the upper end of the lake along the main channel.
     The big fish of the week was a 14.6-pounder landed by Mike Bracamonte, Covina, fishing rainbow Nitro Bait off the sandy beach. Trua and Lam Lee, both of Los Angeles, topped off their stringer with a 14-pound rainbow caught on a nightcrawler rolled in Hatchery Dust while fishing from a boat. Don Stevenson, Temecula, landed a 13-pounder fishing orange PowerBait in the cove behind the bait shop.
     One of the best stringers of the week was a 10-fish, 27-pound catch reported by Pat and Jim Gray of Covina while fishing chartreuse PowerBait from a boat. The top fish on their stringer was a 12 1/2-pound rainbow. Ceilo Sandoval, Santa Ana, also had a 12 1/2-pound trout on an orange trout plastic with garlic and Hatchery Dust. Matt Dominguez, Rancho Cucamonga, caught a 12 1/4-pound rainbow on chartreuse PowerBait and two-pound test line. Chad Homan Jr., Escondido, landed an 11-pound rainbow fishing a Trout King jig in the back corner of the lake from a boat.

PRIZE MONEY:

The Three Heaviest Trout weighed in before the weigh-in cut-off time of 2:00pm will be declared the WINNERS. Each Contestant may weigh in ONLY ONE Big Trout during the Event. Once you have weighed in your BIG FISH, you may NOT weigh in a larger fish later. You can weigh in your fish any time after the Tournament Director is prepared to weigh fish in. A fin will be clipped on all fish weighed in the BIG FISH Event. In the event of a tie, the first fish weighed in, wins the tie. There will be NO RE-WEIGHS, once the weight is recorded, the weight is FINAL. All fish will be weighed on the Tournament scale ONLY. The Tournament Director will thoroughly inspect all three of heaviest fish and may also scan the fish with a metal detector to verify the accuracy of the weight of the fish. The Tournament Director’s decisions on all weights and qualifications are FINAL.

First Place         Receives 50% of the total Big Fish Prize Money.

BLIND BOGEY EVENT: WEIGH-IN CUT-OFF IS 2:45pm SHARP!!

Ten (10) random weight numbers will be chosen by a computerized random number generator. The numbers will range between TWO (2) Pounds and THIRTY (30) Pounds, in one ounce increments.

Ten (10) Winners will be selected by the weight of the fish the Contestants weigh in, and will split the Blind Bogey Prize Money, each receiving one 10th of the Prize Money. Based upon 200 Participants = $200.00 each! Any of the three BIG FISH Winners may ALSO enter their winning fish weights into the BLIND BOGEY Event.

You may weigh in one fish, or any combination of fishup to five trout. All trout you weigh must be fish you personally caught. You may not share or borrow other fish you did not catch to obtain your Blind Bogey weight.

Once you weigh in your fish, your weight and your name will be recorded and you will be given a ticket with the weight written on it. Save this ticket and present it if a number is called out that could potentially make you a winner.

The Tournament Director will call out the randomly selected weight numbers one at a time. The person coming closest to the selected weight, without going over, will win. If there is a tie, because two or more Contestants have the same weight numbers, the game “Rock Paper Scissors” will be played by the tied contestants to determine the final winner. The Tournament Director will explain and supervise the “Rock Paper Scissors” elimination game,and declare the final winner of the tied Contestants. You may ONLY win ONE TIME in the Blind Bogey Event. You MUST be present to win. Claiming a prize of another person is NOT PERMITTED. The weight on your ticket must match the recorded weight for your name.

GENERAL FISHING RULES:

1. ONLY TROUT ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE EVENT.
2. TRADING FISH, TEAM FISHING, GIVING FISH TO SOMEONE TO WEIGH-IN, WHO DID NOT ACTUALLY CATCH THE FISH, IS PROHIBITED AND WILL VOID THAT FISHERMAN’S PARTICIPATION IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALONG WITH THE PERSON GIVING THE FISH.
3. The fish must be legally caught, using no more than two fishing rods per fisherman. No more than two hooks can be used on each rod. The fish must be caught by the fish actively taking the bait, lure or jig in its mouth, and not snagged or netted.
4. Catch and Release or Culling for larger fish or a larger limit, is prohibited.
5. Violation of any Derby rules will make the Fisherman ineligible to participate in the Event or receive a payout. If violations of rules are observed, the violations must be reported immediately when witnessed, to the Tournament Director so timely investigation, decision and actions can be taken. Reporting a violation in an un-timely or in an after the fact manor, and or after a payoff has been made will NOT reverse any payoff or the decided outcome.  The Tournament Director’s decision on all issues, including the decision to investigate or not investigate any reported violation(s), will be made solely and unilaterally buy the Tournament Director and the Director’s decision will be FINAL.

Tournaments and the competition to win prizes can unfortunately bring out the worst in some people. We hold these events with the hope that everyone will conduct themselves as true “Sportsmen”, help each other, and have fun. Anyone causing problems during the Event, or not following the Lake Rules will be eliminated from the Tournament and asked to leave the Lake.

Giant trout parade marches on at Santa Ana River Lakes      

For the second week in a row, the have been dozens of giant rainbow trout topping 12 pounds pouring out of Santa Ana River Lakes in Orange County, and plants of the bruisers again this week will just keep that parade going.      Fishing buddies Bob Bar, Ben Hinojosa, Gus Torres, and Andrew Navarro, all of Orange, were all fishing from shore near the boat dock and the four anglers weighed in five trout that totaled 63 pounds – nearly a 13-pound average. All four were fishing Lip RipperZ jigs and the top fish was the week’s best trout at 16 1/2-pounds.      Frank Grijalua, Montebello, landed a 16 1/4-pounder on rainbow garlic PowerBait at the pumphouse shoreline, while David Senteno, Whittier, caught a 15 3/4-pounder on orange PowerBait off La Palma Point. Dave Beaver helped five-year-old Chris Walton land a 15 1/2-pounder rainbow. The Anaheim pair was fishing an orange trout worm made slimy with Love Sauce and then rolled in the new Hatchery Dust. Robert Avemaria, Placentia, landed a 14-pound rainbow on an orange Mouse Tail from Chris’ Pond.      Jessica Ramirez and Erica Knapp, both South Gate, landed a 13 1/2-pounder on chartreuse PowerBait, while 13-pounders were landed by Alex Garcia, Buena Park, on a pink and white Power Worm and Steve Guerrero, Placentia, on rainbow PowerBait.      Pete Armenta, Mira Loma, landed a 12 3/4-pound rainbow on an inflated nightcrawler, while Rob Carpit, Long Beach, caught a 12-pound, 10-ounce rainbow on chartreuse dough bait. David Bull, Chino, landed a 12 ¼-pound rainbow on an inflated nightcrawlers, and 12-pounders were reported by Steven Tyler, Corona, and Vincent Virgen, Buena Park.      While the big trout were grabbing everyone’s attention because the big boys are showing every day, the bite has been wide open on trout from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pounds thanks to heavy weekly plants. Seven to 10-pound, five-fish stringers are common from all around the big lake and Chris’ Pond. While the action is good on the small trout jigs and plastics fished on light leaders, the hot bite has been on any of the floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust that is finally available at The Lakes and in fishing tackle stores throughout Southern California.      Big rainbows will continue to be a component of every week’s giant trout stocking at Santa Ana River Lakes this season. Trout over 10 pounds are likely to be plucked from the complex daily, and most days anglers will see several rainbows this size landed – even if they aren’t the lucky angler to catch it themselves.      Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven-days-a-week. Anglers continue to pound the trout at Corona Lake, including trophy rainbows
Corona Lake trout anglers have had a field day over the past week with a great mix of trophy rainbow trout and stringer-filling one to two pounders. Limits have been common during the long New Year’s holiday weekend.      The biggest trout reported was a 14 3/4-pounder landed by Ben Hinojosa, Orange, while fishing a Lip RipperZ jig from a float tube, while Gilbert Mejia, Riverside, caught a 13 1/2-pounder on a nightcrawler off JD’s Point. Craig Well, Wildomar, landed an 11 1/2-pounder fishing rainbow PowerBait at the dam shoreline.      Fishing buddies Landon and Josh Lacy, Eddie Rookers, and J.B. and Chad Gierlich, all Riverside, all had five-fish limits fishing B-Line Jigs from float tubes all over the lake. The total weight for the 40 fish was 48 pounds and a six-pounder was the top trout. This certainly wasn’t an atypical catch. In face, nice stringers of trout like this were common, especially for boat and float tube anglers who could work the far shoreline channel.      The rainbows are showing on a wide variety of floating baits rolled in the new Hatchery Dust, scent-doused nightcrawlers, small trout jigs and trout plastics. All of the baits and lures have been more effective when fished on nothing heavier than four-pound test leaders. Hatchery Dust, which is rolled onto and into bait balls of any dough bait, is now available at the Corona Lakes tackle shop, along with most area sporting goods stores.      Heavy weekly plants of rainbows averaging one to two pounds will continue each week, and those plants always have a hefty component of rainbows from five to eight pounds along with super trophies topping 10 pounds and going well up into the teens each week.      Corona Lake is open on a seven-days-a-week schedule. Santa Ana River Lakes cranks out dozens of huge rainbows     

An 18-pound rainbow trout caught by Steve Tran of Rowland Heights was the top fish in a parade of monster trout landed at Santa Ana River Lakes over the long holiday weekend. His fish was caught the day the big trout were planted last Friday and he landed the rainbow on a gold Kastmaster.     There were also 16-pound rainbows caught by Craig Miyamoto, Fontana, on garlic PowerBait off La Palma Point, and Melanya Tiratsuyan, Canoga Park, landed another 16-pounder fishing chartreuse PowerBait from a boat along the east shoreline. Teodulo Rongvillo, East Los Angeles, caught a 15 1/2-pounder on a worm-PowerBait combo at Levitz’ Corner. Jessica Wu, Fullerton, had a 15-pounder at the Bubble Hole on a nightcrawler, and a 14 1/4-pound rainbow was caught by Melvin Lopez, Long Beach, on orange PowerBait off La Palma Point. Craig Atkinson, Orange, had rainbows at 14 and 11 pounds fishing a white trout plastic worm dropshot style at the Toad Road. He returned with fishing buddy Clinton Whisler, Orange, and they each had 13 1/2-pounders on Lip RipperZ jigs. Rick and Ann Burns, Altadena, had a seven-fish stringer topped off with a 13-pounder while fishing garlic PowerBait and mini jigs. Jay Lamori, West Covina, had an 11 3/4-pound rainbow from the bubble hole on chartreuse PowerBait.      But it all wasn’t about big fish. There were many solid stringers of trout average from one to two pounds. Art and Joe Villa, Orange, and Pat Grey, Covina, had a 15-fish stringer that weighed a solid 20 pounds fishing nightcrawlers with garlic Eagle Claw Gravy at the pumphouse. Henry Manzo, Pico Rivera, had a 12-fish stringer that was topped off with a 7 1/2–pounder fishing chartreuse dough bait at the spillway.      The huge, heavyweight rainbows will be planted on Friday again this week for the four-day New Year’s long weekend.      “We’re going to load up on the big fish again this week,” said Craig Elliott. “This is the time of the year when The Lakes’ stock the biggest fish of the season and the most big fish of the year.”      The bite has been good all around the big lake and Chris’ Pond with the new water circulation system working exceptionally well and the fish well distributed throughout both of the lakes. The bite was good for shore, float tube, and boat anglers and there were no real hot spots.      Anglers fishing small jigs or trout plastics might be getting a little faster action than the dough bait crowd, but both tactics are getting a lot of fish. Top colors for both the jigs, plastics, and dough bait has been the chartreuse and greens, yellow, orange, and rainbow, and anglers fishing light leaders are having the best success.      The much-hyped Hatchery Dust has shipped will be available in the SARL bait shop beginning this week. It will also be in many sporting goods stores by the end of the week.      Santa Ana River Lakes is back on its seven-days-a-week schedule after being closed on Christmas. Excellent rainbow action continues at Corona Lake     

 The excellent trout bite has continued at Corona Lake over the past week, and in addition to the limit-style fishing that has been going on for two months, there were more double-digit fish mixed in on stringers Christmas weekend after a plant of the big boys last Friday.      Those giant trout from 10 to 20 pounds will be planted again this Friday for the New Year’s long weekend. They will go in along with the regular load of one to two-pounders and those teenage-sized trout up to eight or 10 pounds. That just means this hot fishing is likely to continue right on in to 2013, in spite of the Mayan calendar.      The big trout from Corona this past week was a 16 1/2-pound rainbow that was caught by Daniel Moore, Corona, while fishing chartreuse PowerBait from shore right behind the tackle shop on four-pound test. Pete Castro, Riverside, landed a 15 1/4-pounder on the same bait at the dam. A 14 3/4-pound rainbow was posted by Jason Hernandez, Ontario, fishing from a float tube with a trout plastic worm.      Nice stringers of trout were common, especially for boat and float tube anglers who could work the far shoreline channel. Cameron Furrer, Norco, had a five-fish limit that weighed 14 1/2 pounds and included a 10 1/2-pounder fishing B-Line Jigs from his tube. Travis Hansen, Lake Elsinore, had five rainbows that weighed 20 pounds, including a seven-pounder to top off the stringer, and he was fishing a nightcrawler-chartreuse PowerBait combo at the dam.      The trout are showing on a wide variety of floating baits, scent-doused nightcrawlers, small trout jigs and trout plastics. Big rainbows continue to pour out of Santa Ana River Lakes

Santa Ana River Lakes rainbow trout action has been excellent over the past week and the parade of big trout through the tackle shop from six to 12 pounds has been a long and steady one.      The best news is that this week is when the really big trout are being planted for the long four-day Christmas weekend. The plant last week only held the “teenagers.”      The largest trout weighed in the tackle shop was a 14-pounder caught by Victor Perez, Anaheim, at the Bubble Hole on garlic dough bait, while Taylor Ware, Corona, landed a 13-pound rainbow near the boat dock on rainbow dough bait. Ben Hinojosa, Orange, had an 11 1/2-pound rainbow and an eight-pound trout on two different trips to the lake topping his stringers each of those days. An 11 1/4-pound trout topped off the 23-pound stringer of rainbows posted by Jerit Cokeman and Andrew Ramsey, both Long Beach, fishing off the sandy beach with chartreuse dough bait. John Aslanyan, Studio City, fished a mini jig at the bubble hole for his 10 1/2-pound trout.      There were at least another dozen fish weighed in from seven to 10 pounds and most anglers weren’t even bothering to weigh fish that size.      “The fishing hasn’t been like this in many years,” said Craig Elliott at SARL. “The good old days are back.”      The action has been good all around the big lake and Chris’ Pond with the new water circulation system working exceptionally well and the fish well distributed throughout both of the lakes. Corona Lake trout action remains simply wide open

Limit-style fishing with a lot of six to 10-pound rainbows has been what Corona Lake anglers are reporting over the past week. Most of the trout are in the one-pound class, but most stringers have at least one or two kicker fish in those bigger size classes.      There were two 11 1/2-pound rainbow weighed in at the bait shop, one by Ralph Acarso, Moreno Valley, on a Mouse Tail off JD’s Point and the second by James Elskamp, Ontario, on a marshmallow off the west shoreline. Trout at 10 1/2-pounds were caught by Doug Batter, Garden Grove, on a jig from a float tube and by Dave Halfacre, West Covina, fishing a jig from shore. Halfacre also had a 5 1/2-pounder as part of his stringer, and on another day he had a five-trout limit that weighed in at 16 3/4-pounds and included a 7 1/2-pounder. Jimmy Nunez, Chino Hills, landed a five-fish, 16 1/2-pound stringer topped off by a 7.4-pound rainbow, all on chartreuse floating bait from shore.      The bite has been good for the rainbows on a wide variety of scented floating baits and scent-doused nightcrawlers, but the small jigs and plastic trout worms are just as good if not better. One of the keys for both has been to fish light leaders.      As good as the fishing has been this past week, the action will just get better for the two long holiday weekends at Christmas and New Year’s. This week and next week there will be bonus plants of three to eight-pound rainbows and loads of the Super Trout weighing 10 or more pounds with fish topping 20 pounds possible. That is in addition to the regular plants of one- to two-pound class rainbows.      Corona Lake will close 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 and remain closed all day Christmas, but it will go back to its seven-days-a-week schedule the day after Christmas, including the New Year’s holiday. Trout fishing was beyond exceptional at Santa Ana River Lakes over the weekend. The reopening of this popular Orange County fishery was beyond all anglers’ expectations after three huge trout plants that included incredible volume and more big rainbows than have been planted in a number of years. Anglers also lauded the quality of the full-tailed, brightly-colored trout.
“Some people said it was the best trout fishing they’ve ever had in their lives,” said Craig Elliott at SARL. “People were buying double and triple passes. Everyone just had huge smiles on their faces, and there were more big fish than I’ve seen in a long time — probably ever.”
The biggest fish reported over the opening weekend was a 15-pound rainbow landed by Vo Chau, Anaheim, on green dough bait from Chris’ Pond. But that was just one of over a dozen 10-pound or better class fish reported on Friday through Sunday.
Elliott said that only about 40 percent of the anglers catching big fish bothered to go up to the tackle shop to weigh and report fish because everyone carries hand digital scales these days.
Steve Zookzwad, Baldwin Park, landed a 12-pound, five-ounce on rainbow PowerBait at the pumphouse, and Joe Fernandez, Placentia, landed a 12-pounder to top off his four-fish 36-pound stringer, also caught on PowerBait at the Pumphouse.
Eric Mossman, Pete Guerrero, and Glen Matsushita, all Carson, weighed in their six best trout for 52 pounds total, including one at 11 1/2-pounder by Mossman. All were caught on mini jigs at the Bubble Hole from a boat. Craig Adkinson, Bob Barr, and Ben Hinojosa, all Orange, weighed in their top five trout for a 35-pound total, and the best fish was Adkinson’s 11-pounder. All five were taken on Trout Kings and Lip RipperZ baits.
Another 11-pounder was landed by Israel Carranza, Cerritos, fishing a hatchery pellet and a nightcrawler from the shore near the pumphouse, and that fish was matched by yet another 11-pounder caught by Oscar Laloca, Chino, to top off his five-fish, 17 1/2-pound stringer caught on PowerBait.
One of the most impressive stringers of the weekend was a 35-fish catch weighed in by Michael Godinho, Blake Brewart, and Tim Kruse, of Ontario and Upland. The stringer was 75 1/2 pounds and the big fish was an 8 3/4-pounder. The trio was fishing near the Bubble Hole from shore and from float tubes and they were hurling both Kastmasters and corn PowerBait. The 10-fish, 50-pound catch by Adrian Contreras, Clint Jerome, and Justin Beitler, all Riverside, was as impressive. The trio’s big trout was an 8 1/2-pounder, and they were all caught on Pewee Worms.

The action was good all around the big lake and Chris’ Pond with the new water circulation system working exceptionally well and the fish well distributed throughout both of the lakes. The bite was good for shore, float tube, and boat anglers and there were no real hot spots.
The fishing should stay this hot through the rest of December and into early January. There will again be huge plants each of the coming three weeks, with bonus plants of three to eight pound “teenage” rainbows along with some of the super trophies – those double digit rainbows up to 20 pounds — on the Fridays before Christmas and New Year’s day. This week’s Thursday plant will also have tons of one-pounder and some of those teenage trout and a few trophies.

Anglers continue to report limit-style
rainbow trout action at Corona Lake
The trout bite has continued to be excellent at Corona Lake with most anglers reporting limit-style fishing on rainbows average better than a pound, and many stringers have kicked fish topping three pounds.
The big fish reported this past week was a 10 3/4-pounder landed by Ricardo Vaquerano, Panorama City, fishing a jig on light tackle from a boat. There were a pair of 10 1/4-pound rainbows landed. The first was caught by Robert Medina, Moreno Valley, fishing green PowerBait from shore, and the second was landed by Robert Martinez, Ontario, also on floating bait from shore. Ho Vu, Hollywood, had an eight-pound rainbow, also on green floating bait from shore.
Top stringer was a 30-fish, 64 1/2-pound catch reported by Santiago Palacios, West Covina, that included both trout and catfish. He bought a pair of 24-hour passes and landed cats to 5 1/4-pounds on shrimp. One of the best trout-only stringers was a 10-fish, 25-pound limit posted by Jeff and Michele Chodowski, Pomona, fishing Lip RipperZ jigs from shore. Their best rainbow was a four-pounder. A typical double-limit of 10-trout was reported by Ben and Tailer Maple, Winchester. Their stringer was 14 1/4-pounds and included a 2 1/2-pounder, all on nightcrawlers from a boat.
The weekly plants, which always include trophy fish, have made for excellent action. The rainbows are showing on scented floating baits and nightcrawlers, but the small jigs, plastic trout worms, and spoons are doing nearly as good.
There will also be bonus plants of three to eight-pound rainbows and loads of 10-plus pounders added the weekends before Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Friday after three huge trout plants
Three huge trout plants have poured in Santa Ana River Lakes over the past two weeks in preparation for the grand reopening set for this Friday (Dec. 7). The lake will be loaded with thousands of pounds of one to two-pound rainbows, along with a hefty supply of quality Sierra Bows from six to 20 pounds.
The longer-than-expected maintenance was to improve the water circulation between the three lakes at Santa Ana River Lakes, and the work is expected to make for better fishing conditions this trout season. Rather than having the water flow in at the top of all three lakes, the water is now moved through the lakes via bottom feeds and drains. This will improve water circulation and aeration.
“It going to make the fishing better all around the lakes rather than just at a few spots,” said Craig Elliott.
He also wanted to remind anglers that the “good old days” of SARL fishing are returning, when giant rainbows topping 10 pounds and some into the 20-pound class and bigger, will be back at The Lakes every week of the trout season this year.
“Big trout are being planted every week of the season this year, and anglers will have the opportunity to catch and see caught these monster Super Sierra Bows every time they fish The Lakes this season,” said Elliott.

Trout action remains sizzling
at Corona Lake despite storms
Corona Lake’s trout action has remained good in spite of rain much of the past week. Heavy weekly plants, including trophy fish, have made for excellent action. More fish are showing on highly scented baits this week, with nightcrawlers and floating dough baits with scent attractants added getting the most play. The anglers fishing small jigs, plastic trout worms, and spoons are doing nearly as good when they key on bright, flashy colors.
The top rainbow reported this past week was a 10-pounder landed by Robert Gonzalez, Whittier, while fishing a nightcrawler from a boat. Lino Jubilado, Alhambra, landed an 8 1/4-pounder from his float tube on PowerBait fishing near the launch ramp, while Julian Lopez, Long Beach, had a 7 1/4-pounder on a salmon egg from the west shoreline.
There were also some impressive stringers landed. Tim Chao, Riverside, had five rainbows for a 22-pound total, all in the four to five-pound range, fishing Lip RipperZ jigs from a boat. Arie Schmutzer, Jason Ross, and Ethan Hattersley, all Wildomar, had 12 trout for a 22 1/2-pound stringer fish chartreuse Nitro Bait in the rain from a boat. Chad Homan Jr. and Chad Sr., Escondido, landed five fish to 4 1/2-pounds for a 14-pound stringer at the dam on green floating bait.
A few sturgeon continue to show with the cooling water conditions. Danny Zamora, Arizona, landed an 18 1/2-pound sturgeon while fishing from a boat with a nightcrawler.

Anaheim Lake closes
with big trout parade
The final week of fishing at Anaheim Lake was excellent with anglers taking advantage of half-price permits and collecting a lot of nice stringers of rainbow trout, including a number of trophby fish.
The big fish of the final week was a 14-pound rainbow landed by Daniel Kalahele, Orange, fishing a chartreuse jig at the spillway from shore. Jen Goodman, Yorba Linda, had an 11-pound rainbow on a white Lip RipperZ jig also at the spillway from shore.
Anaheim Lake closed for the season after this past Sunday’s fishing, and it will remain closed until Santa Ana River Lakes closes again for routine maintenance.

Half-price tickets though final

Fishing permit costs have been cut in half at Anaheim Lake for this final week of the trout season before the lake closes after this coming Sunday (Dec. 2).
“Fishing prices haven’t been this low in 20 years,” said Craig Elliott at Anaheim Lake. “We’re asking anglers to come out and help us catch out the trout and catfish before the lake closes for the season.”
Elliott said the lake received massive trout plants, including trophy fish to nearly 20 pounds for the Thanksgiving weekend, and the action has been excellent since then and most of the biggest fish have not been landed yet. The catfish bite has also been very good, but little tapped, after plants of channels and blues all summer and early fall.
The top trout reported over the holiday weekend were rainbows at 10 1/2 pounds landed by David Perez, Atwood, fishing chartreuse floating bait from shore, while Jakob Gunterman, Huntington Beach, landed his 10 1/2-pounder on a white Lip RipperZ jig fishing from a float tube. Tucker McCombs, Oxnard, landed a 10-pound Sierra Bow on a Kastmaster. Greg Schowen, Fontana, and Danny Fernandez, Carson, had five trout for a total of 32 pounds with the big fish on the stringer at eight and seven pounds. All were caught on Smokin’ Jigs in white at the spillway. Kevin, Zane, and Steven Smith, all Harbor City, had 11 trout for a 20 1/4-pound stringer and their big fish was an eight-pounder landed by Kevin. All their trout were caught on Lip RipperZ.
Most of the trout were averaging around a pound to two pounds and stringers were common. Art and David Stone, Anaheim, had 10 trout for 13 1/2 pounds fishing green dough bait from shore, while Brandon and Tony Ontiveros, Oxnard, had five rainbows for 20 1/2 pounds.
The spillway has been one of the most consistent spots for quality fish and limits, but there are trout showing around much of the lake, with the north shore, pumphouse shoreline, the bubble hole, and Trout Island also good bets. The top baits were the small trout plastics, trout jigs, and floating dough baits in a variety of colors.
Anaheim Lake will close for the season after Sunday’s fishing. Private boats, kayaks, and float tubes are allowed at Anaheim Lake, but they will be inspected for traces of water or evidence of quagga mussel contamination before being allowed on the water.

Corona Lake’s trout action has remained wide open with nice stringers the rule rather than the exception over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Heavy plants made for an excellent bite, especially for anglers who can fish small jigs, plastic trout worms, and floating dough baits on light tackle.
There were also some huge trophy Sierra Bows planted for the holiday and the big fish reported was a 14-pounder landed by Jose Delfin, Riverside, fishing garlic chartreuse floating bait from shore. Tim Halley, Las Vegas, landed 10-pound rainbow fly-fishing from his float tube along the east shoreline. Eight-pound trout were caught by Santiago Palacios, West Covina, on a chartreuse floating bait and Pete Perez, Moreno Valley, on Captain America floating bait. J.J. Messinese, Riverside, landed a 7 3/4-pound trout, and Jayden Sage, Fontana, landed a seven-pounder.

Monster rainbows are coming to
Anaheim Lake for Thanksgiving
Huge plants of giant rainbow trout are on tap for this Thanksgiving weekend at Anaheim Lake.
“We’re bringing back the ‘good old days,’ and we’re confident more big trout will be caught at Anaheim and Corona lakes this week than all other lakes in California combined,” said Craig Elliott at Anaheim Lake.
The plants, which include trophy rainbow trout from 12 to 20 pounds and more, will be made at the sister waters of Anaheim and Corona on Wednesday afternoon. Anaheim Lake will close at 2 p.m. Wednesday to allow for the plants and remain closed all day on Thanksgiving day. The lake will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday morning.
Anglers had a hint of things to come this past week when four to 10-pound “teenage” rainbows were planted at Anaheim Lake, and the bite was fantastic on these mid-size trophies and the tons of one-pound rainbows that provide almost non-stop action.
The top rainbow reported was a 10 1/2-pounder landed by Anh Dao, Garden Grove, fishing a yellow dough bait at the spillway. Daniel Fernandez and Aaron Martinez, both Ontario, had trout at 10, eight, and five pounds fishing jigs from the shore near the spillway. Eythan Rosenberg, Van Nuys, was fishing a jig from a float tube at the spillway to catch a 10-pounder, and Hector Ramirez, West Covina, had a 10-pounder fishing a nightcrawler-floating bait combo at the bubble hole. J.B. and Brad Gierlich, Riverside, had 10 rainbows for a 28 1/2-pound total stringer topped with a 9 1/2-pounder. The father-son duo was fishing white jigs at the spillway. Another 9 1/2-pounder was caught by Sydney Church, Norwalk, on a nightcrawler, and James Aiken, Los Angeles, landed a nine-pound rainbow on a rainbow dough bait at the spillway.
Five-fish stringers were common and most weighed from six to eight pounds, but many had a kicker fish or two. Jeff Borg, Long Beach, had five rainbows for 18 total pounds and his best fish was a four-pounder, all on Power Worms from a float tube near the spillway. Shon Roberts, Yorba Linda, had five trout for 16 1/2 pounds, including a 5 1/2-pounder, fishing white Lip RipperZ jigs at the spillway.

The trout action remain excellent for finesse anglers tossing small jigs and plastic trout worms on light tackle at Corona Lake, and the action is nearly as good on floating dough baits and inflated nightcrawlers doused with scent. The bottom line is that many anglers are scoring full five-fish limits of trout.
The real buzz this week is about the huge plant of huge rainbows slated to go in Wednesday afternoon.
