FANTASTIC FISHING COUPLED WITH NATURE’S DISPLAY OF UNBELIEVABLE BEAUTY

Preparing for a fishing experience at Woxof Lodge is real easy.  All you need to pack is a change of clothing, camera, toiletries and rain gear.  Everything else is furnished, including the finest rods, reels, terminal tackle and bait.

Your adventure starts with an Alaskan Airlines flight to Petersburg, Alaska. (Airfare extra)  You will see breath taking views from the plane of the Alaskan snow packed mountain ranges, glaciers and densely covered pine forests.  The landing in Petersburg is an experience in itself.  Petersburg was settled years ago by Norwegian fishermen and is to this day a thriving fishing village, complete with canneries, fish processing plants and a whole fleet of fishing boats.

Rob Searing, owner of Woxof Lodge, will meet you at the dock when your plane lands in Petersburg.  You will board Rob’s guide boat for a 50 mile cruise to the Lodge at Point Baker, Alaska, or you can hire a float plane for a quicker arrival.  Point Baker is a remote fishing village, tucked back into a small cove on one of the many, many islands that make up this portion of South East Alaska.  Pt. Baker is populated by about 18 families who live and earn their living fishing for the abundant Halibut and Salmon that swim these remote waters.

As Rob’s boat pulls up to the sheltered waters of the cove, you see the Lodge and the unbelievable beauty and splendor of this magnificent area of Alaska.  Forests so densely populated with pine trees, ferns and berries that it is impossible to penetrate the forest on foot, for more than just a few feet.

A typical fishing day begins with Rob and his assistant Chris preparing a lumberman’s breakfast of usually ham, bacon, eggs and hash browns. If you are into continental breakfast, there is cereal, fruit, pastry and coffee as well.

The daily fishing trip begins when Rob loads up the boat with all the fishing gear and bait.  Chris has prepared sandwiches for lunch and everyone jumps in.  Rob’s guide boat is spacious and plenty of room for six fishermen.  The guide boat is equipped with live wells and every electronic fishing aid possible.  There are fish finders, graphs, radar, G.P.S., down riggers you name it, Rob has it installed.  But more important than electronic gear and equipment is Rob’s knowledge and experience fishing these waters for many years.  He’s located and plotted every fishing hole and hot spot for miles around.  When he pulls up to his first location, he shows you how to present the bait, how deep to fish and all the tricks and techniques you need to load the boat with fish.  Talking about fishing, here’s what you can expect to catch.  King Salmon from 30 to 40 pounds, Silvers to 14 pounds, Ling Cod to 40 pounds or larger and Halibut anywhere from 20 to over 100 pounds.  These waters are famous for Salmon and huge Halibut, as testified by literally scores of commercial fishermen, who came to this area, fill their boats with fish.  Last year my party of fishermen filled the boat daily with Salmon, halibut, rock fish and two of our party joined the 100 Club, by registering Halibut of 108 and 110 pounds each.

After a great day of fishing, Rob sets course for the Lodge to arrive late afternoon for a hot shower, some relaxation, maybe a card game or a good book.  Dinner is served and its gourmet all the way.  You can expect delicious steaks, barbequed fresh fish from the days catch, crab legs from one of Rob’s crab traps and served with all the trimmings of baked potatoes, salad and desert.  You just can’t beat it.  After dinner you can watch anyone of a wide selection of movies and T V mini series Rob has collected for your enjoyment.

But the day is not over for Rob and Chris who expertly filet the days catch, vacuum pack the filets in appropriate sized packages and deep freeze them all.  Each day the catch is prepared and frozen solid for shipment back home.  Rob provides cardboard, waxed shipping containers for transportation.  Alaska Airlines is experienced in handling fish shipments and your fish arrive home, with your baggage, solidly frozen.

But fantastic fishing is just part of your experience at Woxof Lodge.  Every day you will be thrilled by the whooshing sound of mammoth Humpbacked Wales, surfacing within just a few feet of your boat and blowing spray several feet into the air.  Then there is the magnificent flight of beautiful bald eagles soaring, then swooping down to grab fish in their talons and returning their catch to a nest high atop a pine tree, to feed their young.  You may even see black bear forging for food along the shore line of one of the many islands in this area.  Rob takes time out to let you see the fish being off loaded at Point of Protection, the fishing village just around the point to the next cove.  This is an experience you will never forget and a site seeing extravaganza unequaled anywhere on earth.
